I'm asuming that we're talking about the NI-Mh battery and not the LI-ION,
as the latter does not require (nor respond well) to refreshing.

First, pull the battery. Then turn off the power (if the power switch won't
respond, use the reset switch). Once the power is off, replace the battery
(make sure the battery's switch is ON) and wait for the charge light to come
on while the computer is off.

Once the indicator shows that the battery is charging, re-boot the computer
but do NOT discharge/recharge the battery yet. Wait for the indicator to
show that the battery is completely charged and then recycle the battery
again. This will restore the batt's internal monitor.
