Using the Mic in on a 570

I'm using a new 570 and would like to record using using a mic plugged in
to the mic in hole on the side of the machine. It's not working. No sound
is recorded. I can record just fine if I pull the mic out and talk at the
box, letting the internal mic pick it up. "Fine", but it sounds
awful. I've been through all the mixer selections, making sure the mic
was selected, etc.
I've tried a couple different programs and two different mic's.
