how fast is the power draining from the battery..??
when..?? machine on, off, suspend or hibernate or all of the foregoing..???
reading the initial problem, it sure sounds like the ac adapter.. BUT, on most,
if not all, newer thinkp[ads, the cable between the ac adapter and the thinkpad
is a coaxial cable.. less prone to work hardening and breakage..

check your OS and its power management software..

what thinkpad model is it that you have..??

AND, the tel# for ibm support, in the USA, is 800-772-2227, outside the USA, its
different for each country..
if you tell me where you are, i'll get the local (more or less) tel # for IBM
support..
is our machine still under warranty..??? :-)
