i discussed the benefits of "leave it on 24/7" and "boot up daily and spin down
>from time to time" with an engineer from Priam Disk drives in milpitas many many
years ago..
the result was it makes little difference..
(heat/cool, landing and taking off, spindle wear when starting, etc., etc.)
these days these drives have to be better at landing and taking off with little
or no wear to the platters, so, IMO, its still a toss up..
BUT, these days a winchester technology drive is waay cheaper than it was "in
those days"..
IRT noise..
i JUST got a 14.1gig drive back from a good customer due to noise..
i ran tests and listened, the drive is 100% and not as noisy as the 14.1gig
drive on my 770Z..
(i have NOT listened to one of these 25gig drives, but when i was testing some
thursday, they sound a bit quieter)
the point is: if i return the drive to vendor and they return it to IBM, in 4 to
6 weeks, the same drive may come back, or a drive thats about the same (noise
wise) and the 4 to 6 weeks and shipping all over the place has gained nothing..
i recently got some toshiba 12gig drives and in addition to haveing a larger
buffer (cache) they run quieter!
all drives make some noise, its just that IBM's are a bit worse overall, and
some are really loud and some are not bad at all..
i hate to suggest this, but: earplugs anyone..?? :-)
