On IBM's BBS another user posted a note that his system (identical 770
configuration) also has the problem which I cited. Thus this is a generic
problem with the 770 and Win2000, thus ruling out defects in my specific
hardware.
I find it interesting on Microsoft's Win2000 web site the IBM 20490 4GB
(what I have) is listed as "possibly" requiring a driver from the
manufacture for "proper" operation.
What you are saying is that somehow Microsoft managed to write an IDE driver
which is incompatible with IBM's drives. This is crazy...
I also note that on IBM's storage web site there is a claim that Win2000
utilizes the disk in a mode which otherwise has not been utilized to date by
Win95/98, etc. I assume that they are referring to UDMA-2. I tried setting
the OS to access the drive with PIO but the problem still existed.
IBM told me yesterday that they currently don't support Win2000 on the 770.
I cited IBM's own web site where the 770 is listed as a supported system for
Win2000....
The next call told me that if I am having problems it must be my machine.
Send it in for service.... I kicked the issue back to them with the response
to look at their own web site and read about another user with the same
problem. Grrrr....
