A typical cause of this is the drive/cable select pins interfering with things - they are in a little group of 4 at one end of the connector. If you can try the cable out of the caddy that works ON ITS OWN (i.e. caddyless) with the drive in a 760E, and it works, then it points towards a difference in the cables. My bet is that you'll have to bend the cable select pins out of the way to get the drive to work with the other cables.

I'm replacing the 810Mb (DSOA-20810) Hard Drives in a number of our Thinkpad 760E /760XL 's
with a new IBM DKLA-24320 (4320 MB). It does not work .
The HD spins up but the Thinkpad does not see it in the BIOS. i.e.. the Drive Icon is grayed out.
The Thinkpad 760XL has the latest Bios .
According to IBM's PDF files , both drives are the same from a pinout point of view.
http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/table.htm The 4.3GB tests fine with an adapter in a desktop .
The (810 MB ) caddy in question is a 29H9366 , 29H9315 ,29H9316.
The cable used is a P/N 29H9422 .
To completely confuse the issue, the 4.3GB HD works with the caddy from a IBM 2.1GB
(DCRA-22110 ).
This caddy is a:
82H8489 ( FRU) , 82H8490 (ASM) , 82H8495. The cable used in this one is P/N 82H5536.
Unfortunately I can not use this caddy since it is too high for the 760E's . Also, I only have one .
The Thinkpad division has issued a case number , but I hoped you folks would have a better idea. CASE # 14634851
