Actually, a SelectaDOCK III has a fan. The selectabase models for the 600
and 770 are passive. You put a selectabase on top of a selectadock. Also,
Win 95/98 doesn't recognize your machine as being docked when you are
connected to a selectabase; however, it does recognize a selectadock as
being "docked" and tries to create a docked profile at that point. Also, a
selectabase with a PC Card Enabler is considered a docking station by 95/98.

A SelectaDock without any additional stuff is totally passive (it's really
a port replicator). When you start adding other things, you may get
additional noise (as from a disk drive, if you add one). However, I
haven't noticed any noise other than the click of the PC Card enabler when
I power up.

I can't give you a comparison to the other models, sorry. I just use the
600.

        Subject: TP600: questions about SelectaDocks

I'm considering the purchase of a SelectaDock and a SelectaBase 600 for
use with my ThinkPad 600E.

Is the TP600 / SelectaBase 600 combo compatible with all of the
SelectaDock I, II and III models. What are the main differences between
the three? Since the I and II models have been withdrawn, it's somewhat
difficult to find detailed info about them on IBM's web site.

I'd like to know how noisy/quiet the SelectaDocks are, because I work in a
very quiet environment and one of the reasons I prefer laptops is their
lower noise level compared to typical desktop units.

I'm also interested to hear about OS/2 compatibility of the SelectaDocks,
especially as far as hot swapping is concerned.

Thanks, Dominique
