I have both. I like the Toshiba *much* better. It's much quieter than the
TravelStar, and it spins down immediately when I put the machine on standby
or shut it down. The 18Gb TravelStar has a noisy whine, and it takes many
seconds to spin down--it doesn't seem to have a spindle brake like all the
other notebook drives.
www.ic-direct.com has the Toshibas for about $450; I've bought lots of stuff
>from them with no problems. Bill Morrow at www.thinkpads.com has TP600
mounting trays, and he sells the TravelStars (and sometimes Toshibas,
although I haven't seen the 18Gb listed on his site).
If you haven't been through the drill before, you should get a TP600 tray
and an Ultraslimbay 2nd HDD adapter, then use Partition Magic or the like to
transfer your existing partition to the new drive. Bill sometimes has the
2nd HDD adapters in stock, or else ic-direct has a bunch of them (search
their site for "ultraslimbay").
