Enabling Infrared on ThinkPad 600E

I know this has been asked before, but I don't know how to find list
archives...

Could someone offer tips on enabling the infrared port on a 600E. I believe I
once read that the serial port needs to be disabled, then reboot, then enable
the infrared port, then reboot again. Is this right?
