This seems to be an FAQ of sorts on this list. Thinkpads as shipped do
not allow simultaneous use of the serial port and IR, but the reason is
an IRQ conflict as both IR and serial are set to use the same IRQ by
default. Once the current active port is set to another unused IRQ, the
other port can be made active. Then both IR and serial can be used. On
my 560X I have a Paperport scanner on the serial port and I connect my
Sharp Zaurus by IR. I have had this setup for over a year. No problems.
Summary of steps required:
1. Change IRQ of current active port.
2. Reboot.
3. Enable the inactive port.
4. Reboot.
5. Enjoy.
