Ni-HM Battery - on/off switch???

On my 760xd I have a Ni-HM battery pack. On the back
of it there is a switch marked I and O. Right now it
is set to I.

I would like to know what this switch does.

Also, as I understand that these batterys need to be
charged only when they are fully dischaged. Mine
automatically charges all the time, even when it is
down 2%. Can I make it not charge until it is all the
way down to save batt life?
