I just received a TP 240 a few days ago - it is
my first IBM laptop. Prior to this I have been
using Dell exclusively.

My question is based on the different functions
of Dell and IBM. Dell has two modes - Standby and
Suspend. IBM has two modes - Standby and Hibernate.
The Standby for Dell and IBM is (as far as I can
tell) the same - turn off the screen and hard
drive. The Suspend is very different from the
Hibernate - like the Hibernate, Suspend copies
the current memory to the hard drive, but then
it turns off almost all of the computer. It DOES
NOT shut down the OS, so when you resume it just
spins up the drives, turns on the screen, and
restores the memory - your back up in 10 seconds.
The Hibernate actually shuts down the OS, so you
have to boot the OS before it restores the memory.
This takes a minute or two.

Am I missing something?

With my Dell I would travel with the computer in
Suspend mode - and could be up and working in
seconds - it was great, and barely touched the
battery (suspend overnight would maybe loose 1%
to 2% of battery).

Using Standby on the IBM to achieve the same
function would drain the battery too fast.

Again, Am I missing something?

Thanks

Steven
