  I think your right, Vince. The 3com I/O port probe causes a serial port
hang
of the TP modem. This supports TP FAQ 5.2 - Internal Thinkpad modems
should be disabled; waiting for that inevitable day you forget/break your
pc card dongle or smash your xjack;)

  Can you turn off the 3com probe feature by unchecking "Use automatic
settings" in Device Man?
