Dunno whether the email was sent as a joke, but the IBM patents site is
merely an archive - it has no relation to IBM's commercial ventures and
keeps track of all patents, IBM or not. In any case manufacturers of
such toys would certainly want to protect their intellectual property
rights too, and a patent is the smart way to do it.
