Sorry, made a bad assumption. I just upgraded a customer's Dell
Inspiron laptop which had an image disk... but I do know (but forgot)
that Dell has been shipping a full install version of Windows for
years. Microsoft has been trying to get them away from the Full
Install for a long time. Don't know Dell's current policy.

You should be able to make that disk work just fine, provided you
download all the files related to that thinkpad from the IBM download
matrices site... Some people still have trouble with hibernation and
such... and of course the bloated size of the full install will be a
problem... the IBM image disk "Recovery Disk" has eliminated any extra
files not used on that Thinkpad... then it adds a lot of other junk
you don't need... promotions, ISP's etc.

I'm glad to see you could get all you needed with the one download...
I think there are six or seven listed... Newest bios is required,
video and audio, utilities and such but I guess nobody needs them all.

You had less trouble than I did on my 760ED, L, or XL.
