I put the drive in the UltraBay of my 770. The NT OS on the 770 can see the
D: drive (NTFS5) of the failing HD, but not the C: drive (FAT). I can see the
directory listing of D: and copy off some files perfectly, but some are just
plain unaccessible. Apparently there is a physical problem with some portions
of the disk platters or heads. I retrieved about 2/3 of the files I needed
and can probably live without the other ones.

In answer to your other question, I believe the drive in the 770 was genuine
IBM. That doesn't mean a lot to me though, because I've had about a dozen
different drives for various ThinkPads over the years, ranging from IBM to
Hitachi, to SigmaData to SimpleTechnology and others. Never before have I had
a HD failure that was more than a bad sector. And, being in the computer
consulting industry for 8 years and electrical engineering before that, I've
used my share of computers.

Thanks,
Rob
