I'm pretty sure I've seen USB ports that plug into the parallel port.
Not sure whether this could be an option for older Thinkpads (at least
bi-directional support would surely need to exist), nor what OS might
be supported (Win9x, no doubt, but as for Win NT/2000/Me, I don't know,
never mind OS/2 or Linux). Maybe an avenue worth exploring
