You could simply use Sound Recorder to test the microphone. FYI,
I had trouble with mine before changing the Recording Properties
to the Crystal Fusion Sound Driver; the machine came with the
Crystal MixerMMX enabled by default and that wouldn't work. To
get there, click on the little speaker icon in your tray, then Options,
then Properties then Recording

It means that you will have to use the Recovery CD in order to get
an operable machine again, thus erasing all your data. Not sure
how that works, but you'll have to agree it's a pretty dire threat <g>
