Thank you, Randal, lest we forget. . . .
We use one of these on our desktop with W98 os, and I don't know whether it
is possible or not to use other software, but the Sony software that comes
with it is remarkably good, imho. The secondary software that came with
it - not the CD Extreme software, but the player/recorder - will
automatically translate sound files to CD format, for example (whereas
friends of mine with other software are doing all sorts of operations on
their files to make the transition). The CD Extreme software itself is
extremely intuitive and seems to work fine.
We did encounter underbuffering (?) problems initially (clicking sounds on
the CD recording), but this is resolved (with this, and I gather any CD/RW)
by copying the originating CD to disk and then to the fresh CD rather than
direct copy; keeping your hard drive well defragged (e.g., after every two
or three CD writes); and using a program such as WinSolo to shut down
everything else on the computer while making copies. I am told that copying
at less than Max speed can also help with this, but we have not found it to
be necessary. It is also a good idea to chose a CD blank of reasonable
quality, then to stick with that brand that works.
Best, Jeff
