Hello,

When I got the 365XD working I thought I could use all the 365ED stuff with
it.
This was only partly true. The batteries and the power adapter worked but
a boot disk in the floppy was not recognized. The floppy worked fine under
windows but I needed boot capability for installing the new 4 gig drive.
This
floppy has an integrated cable and apparently only meant for the 365ED.

I spent alittle time figuring out why it had problems. I ended up spending
$100 dollars for the 10H4056 drive and matching 46H8096 (FRU 74H0219)
cable. It appears that I can use this drive for other thinkpads if I get
the
proper cable. The new floppy works on both laptops. The new floppy
and cable seem less expensive than the old 365ED floppy.

It is difficult to figure out why the old one does not work on the new
machine
as the pinouts are nearly identical. There are some added signal lines that
are not used. There is one pin on the old floppy not used on the new
floppy.
I did manage to figure out most of the pinout of the 365's ext. floppy port.
The old floppy used a Newtronics Mitsumi D359F and the new one
a TEAC FD-05HF 5653-U.

I also noticed mentioned on this list that the 64 meg memory part will work
in the 365XD. It is interesting to see that the 32 meg part is cheap but
the
64 meg part is expensive. I may go for the 32 meg part and have a 40 meg
machine.

IBM seems to track some of this compatibility stuff but only to a point. Am
I correct that the DVD for the 600e will work in a 600? IBM seems to
indicate
no. There may be limitations due to the video chipset in the 600 to
playback movies
but I am mainly interested in DVD as a super CD.

The only problem I have is the disk tray for the 365XD. The 4 gig drive has
different
mounting holes. I noticed that the cover on the 365XD that goes over the HD
has
tape over the two holes for the >2 gig drive. I just need the tray to mount
the drive.
The 365XD recognized the 4 gig drive without problems. The 365ED needs disk
manager
for windows to get out of MSDOS compatibility mode. Anyone know where I can
get a
tray?
