AOL has a new feature called AOL Anywhere. Just surf to http://www.aol.com and
enter your Screen Name and password and you can read AND send your AOL mail from
_anywhere_.
I used my AOL account to keep the kids and family up to date during our two
weeks in China last month. It worked very well logging in from various internet
Cafes in Beijing, Xian, Chongqing, Wuhan, Canton and Hong Kong.
All of which begs the question of why we simply didn't take one of our many
laptops with us. Simple answer is that I feared losing it as they are a
frequently stolen item in China and I didn't want to be constantly carrying it.
Involved answer is that westerners carrying laptops are viewed with suspicion by
various Chinese authorities, particularly Customs and Immigration, that you may
in fact be a reporter in mufti attempting to sneak into the country to write all
sorts of inappropriate stories for the foreign press.
My wife and I both found being without our normally constant companions quite
liberating.

James
