OK, I think I've fixed this, with the aid of some MS knowledge base articles, a
careful search-and-destroy of
all bits the horrible 3com card left on my system, and some experimentation.
There seems to be a nasty catch-22 with some Thinkpads, including the 560X, the
380XD, and some 770s.
Evidently there is a problem with the way W95 initializes TI PCI1250-family
cardbus controllers. There is a
fix for this (and some other problems) by using version 4.00.1121 or later of
the Pci.vxd file. However, this version
of the vxd can trigger a "Code 29" error on the above-mentioned Thinkpads, the
fix for which is to use versions
prior to 4.00.1120.
The 3Com card is apparently sensitive to the cardbus initialization problem,
which is why it wants the later versions of
the file. However, my 560X definitely wants an earlier version (right now it
seems stable with 4.00.1120).
I guess W98 or 2K is in my future.
