I'm still having some trouble with my installation of this evil card (the 3Com
3CXFEM656C) on W95 OSR2. As I noted in earlier posts, the 3Com software wants
very recent versions of the pccard software, especially pci.vxd. However,
installing any version of this later than 4.00.1119 screws up the TI-PCI1250
cardbus controllers which are used on the
560X (also some 770 and 380XD machines). (It also disables IRQ steering.)

When I restored the machine to an earlier driver configuration (with
unexpectedly considerable effort), I found that I could
use the 3Com card provided (a) I did *not* install any of the 3Com software
other than the drivers, and (b) I use the Systemsoft Cardwizard software that
IBM provides for pcmcia management. This is the only time I have ever needed
the
cardwizard software for anything, and frankly it is kind of annoying to have to
load it. Moreover, the card won't be
recognized unless cardwizard is loaded *before* the card is inserted - this
means popping the card before booting, then reinserting it afterwards. Yuck.

OK - has anyone had any better success with this card on this OS on a 560X (or
other TI-PCI1250 machine)?
Also, is the 3Com software sufficiently useful that I should try again to get
it working?

Thanks in advance,
David R. (ross_at_math.hawaii.edu)

PS - here are some interesting documents discussing the controller/W95
problems:
