I have read the original post, and all the replies so far, and I think
everyone has missed something here....
I had a 760ED, and I seem to recall that there was a problem with the
automatic detect of the Trident Video system on these machines. I don't
remember the exact sequence of steps to resolve this, but it seems to me
that you have to select custom installation, and then deselect the Trident
driver. You then install with standard VGA adapter, and follow up by
installing the video driver from the IBM website. I do remember the black
screen, and the lockup occurring if the proper steps were not followed.
Anyone else remember this, or remember the solution a little more accurately
than I do?
I do recommend as others have said, copying the install files to the Hard
Drive, if the drive is big enough, just to make it easier to add accessories
or features in the future. In my case, I always partition the drive as 3
partitions; C for operating system, D for programs and data, and E to store
the Win98 directory, driver updates, and other programs I might need to
reinstall while on the road. This way, it is possible to reconstruct the C
partition on the road if necessary, since formatting C will not lose either
data, or installation files.
