I might upgrade the OS, but prefer not to until it is really really necessary.

Yes, this is an update that installs a too-recent version of pci.vxd and causes
the Thinkpad pcmcia slots
to fail utterly with a cryptic "code 29" error. Of course, it is impossible to
get an earlier version of pci.vxd from MS,
and my system backup was on an external HD which I access through pcmcia. Took
me several hours of painstaking
analysis and experiment to figure out how to restore my system from this
hosing.

I had the latest BIOS - didn't help.

Seems to run well so far - tomorrow I get to try the network interface working.
But, I hate having to pop the
card out before boot, pop it back after.
