I am far from expert, but the recovery CD comes with a bootable floppy & CD.
So you need to figure out if it is possible to enable the USB by installing
drivers on the boot floppy. A PCMCIA CD ROM would have been a better choice
as it is much faster & the PCMCIA drivers are probably easier to put on the
floppy.
My best recommendation would be to ask IBM for a loaner CD ROM drive, they
sent one to me overnight no charge for my 240X, the floppy loads the proper
drivers for this unit, so it should be a snap. You need to return the drive
to them within 30 days, they even paid the return shipping!
