I can't directly answer your question (since I prefer compression to FAT32),
but - did you do the suggested fix w/r to power management (forcing APM instead
of ACPI)?
2 quite useful things I learned this week: (1) MS has released a single version
of TweakUI that works on
W95, W98, and ME. Also, (2) the W95 Powertoys can be 'coerced' to run nicely
on W98. I couldn't live without
these! See http://www.pcforrest.freeserve.co.uk/powertoys.htm for a nice
guide.
I just converted my 560 to W98 as a 'dry run' before I do it on the 560X. Used
98Lite, and even with a fairly
hefty install (including Office 97) my Windows directory is less than 200megs -
very nice! Also, I've kept the W95
explorer instead of the slower W98 explorer.
As a Linux user, you might also be interested in http://www.desktopian.org/,
which discusss alternate shells for
W9x. I've been playing with LiteStep - the heftiest of these alternate shells,
yet still seems to be infinitely peppier than
the Explorer desktop. I also like way they've implemented the multiple
desktops.
