HELP!!!

My 2645-4AU 600E has started to display the _most_ infuriating characteristic
when booting to W2K. I'm sure this is something I have caused by changing the
power settings a few weeks ago, but it has gotten to the point that it's
becoming unusable.

The symptom: While booting W2K, immediately after the initial splash screen
displays, the backlight turns off and STAYS off. No amount of Fn-F7 will turn it
on! External display is just fine if I attach a monitor.

Here's the kicker! Start> Shutdown> Shutdown gets me the normal "Saving your
settings" and the unit shuts down. Next time I power up, the backlight doesn't
come on AT ALL! I have to Fn-F7 just to see the memcount and the Thinkpad splash
screen or even EZSetup! Get to my boot manager, select W2K and the backlight
immediately goes off again!

Needless to say I have attempted to correct whatever I messed up in Power
Management but I have been unable to find the cure. As far as I can tell all of
the settings are exactly the same on both my 600E and 600X, yet the 600X is
showing no such problems.

If I boot to W98 there are no problems on either the initial boot or on
re-boots, e.g. after a W98 shutdown and restart the backlight comes on at
powerup and stays on, so I know that this has something to do with W2K and is
_not_ a hardware problem.

What W2K is doing to my BIOS that makes the laptop default to the external
display on boot is one of the things I'm attempting to identify. Setting the
BIOS to single display, which _should_ default to the LCD, has not corrected the
problem and my next step will be to enable multiple display but I fear taking
that action without some input from the learned folks on the list.

I'm sure that I'm overlooking something very basic here, but I guess the forest
is blocking my view of that tree. All responses are actively sought, even ones
that begin "Hey stupid, did you try .......". ;-)

Regards,

James

PS: Yes, I know my DATE is off by a year. My W2K RC2 timebombed Tuesday night
and I haven't had a chance to upgrade it with my NFR CD. If anyone knows a
"quick and dirty" for that procedure I'd appreciate hearing about it also.
