Ronald, two things:

1) US (RJ11) analog telephone plugs all have 6 connectors, out of which 2,
   4, or 6 are used. The central ones are the actual (main) phone line. I
   think your modem's connector should fit into your phone outlets.

2) You don't mention your operating system. Under modern operating
   systems, you can choose the COM port that a given physical port uses. I
   once assigned COM 20 to my modem to check something (Win2000).
