It's fairly easy to do but not at all obvious. Not
having a floppy and CDRom available at the same time
does complicate things, however. You might want to
acquire an external floppy drive to use for things
like this, since they are quite handy.
First of all, you need a Win98 bootable floppy or
"Windows Startup Disk" as Microsoft calls it. These
don't come with the CD so you will have to use someone
else's computer with Windows98 to make one. Get a
blank 1.44Mb floppy and in Windows go to Start,
Settings, Control Panel. Double click Add/Remove
Programs. Click the upper right tab, "Startup Disk",
put in your floppy and click "Create". Follow the
prompts to create the disk. The disk has everything
you need to setup a blank hard drive and access the
CDRom drive except the FORMAT command. Open Windows
Explorer and go to C:\windows\commands and copy
FORMAT.COM to the floppy. While there, also copy the
EDIT.COM command to your floppy to use later. If you
run out of room, you can delete the ASPI*.SYS files
from the floppy that are used for SCSI devices.
Now, put the newly created boot floppy in your TP and
boot it. When it comes up to the menu, press shift F5
to go to the command prompt. It's faster. Then run
FDISK to partition the drive if not already
partitioned. You might want to check it first with
option #4.
After partitioning, reboot the TP and again go to the
command prompt and run FORMAT to format it. Use
"FORMAT C: /s" to copy the operating system (except in
Windows ME, where the /s doesn't apply). After that is
done is should be bootable.
Now you need to make the hard drive bootable without
the floppy and still have CDRom support. Copy all the
files from the floppy to the hard drive. Then run EDIT
and edit C:\config.sys and C:\autoexec.bat to take out
all the references to the A: drive and save the edited
files back to C:\. You want it to work from C:\ only
and won't have a floppy when you put in the CDRom
drive later.
Next you need to transfer the Windows 98 directory on
the CD to the hard drive. Remove the floppy diskette
and reboot once more and make sure the hard drive is
working correctly. It should say Windows 98 but come
up to the command prompt instead of Windows. You may
have to edit the config.sys and autoexec.bat files
again to clear up some errors. If all is well, power
down and exchange the floppy drive for the CDRom
drive. Power up again and this time when it comes up
to the menu, select the option for CDRom support.
When it is ready, put in the Win98 Cd and make sure
you can read it. Should be drive E: if your C: drive
only has one partition. Next, go to the C: drive and
creat a \Win98 folder, CD to that folder. Now go to
E:\, CD to Win98 and perform "copy *.* to transfer all
the Windows setup files to the hard drive.
You are now ready to install Windows, in the C:\win98
folder, run SETUP. Just follow the prompts from here
on in. You didn't say if you had an upgrade or full
version of Windows SE. If it's an upgrade, you will
need an older version of Windows on CD to show it when
it says it can't find any previous operating system
and asks where it is. Just put in a Windows CD and
select E: as the drive to search.
After Windows is installed, the CDRom drive will go
back to being drive D:\. You will need to download
some files from IBM to complete the installation,
drivers for the video adapter and the Windows
accessory package which has the IBM TP configuration
utility and additional drivers for PCMCIA, etc. and
install them to get everything working properly. Check
the software matrix for your model on IBM's website.
BTW, I would use Windows ME if I had a choice. It
works better than SE!
