I backed-out service pack6a; and the system still was sludged. I now
think that a bad reaction to the Real Player executable that came with Netscape 6 for NT4 played some role, at least. It kept hanging and would not let the systsem shut down. But I intend to use service pack 5 which is known to be good.
Finally I reformatted the partition (which still did not get rid of the NT Boot Manager) and am reloading. For some reason NT thinks the FDISK-recognized 2 gig FAT primary, and 3 logical 2 gig partitions are damaged or unformamtted, and won't load to the contiguous 2 gig NTFS partition.
This is getting to be fun.

I've noticed.
Too bad there's no uninstall option for Windows 2000.
