I always assumed it was exactly for this reason, but then, I don't
really know much about marketing either. My reasoning was that
Thinkpads, and in particular the 701, were originally targeted at rich
business-types. Buying a new battery every year probably would be
less of a problem for these then dealing with a slowly decaying one.
