Can you really do this with a USB floppy? That's just about the only
option - the other being the Ultrabase which I have no intention of
buying.

30usd?? More like nearly 90usd over here.
Oh, and IBM were legally obliged to replace the m/c. And it was an
1800ukp (2800usd) m/c for a 1500ukp (2400usd) m/c, and I had to pay
them 200ukp for the privilege. (Long version of this fiasco available
on request).
