I carried out the test below and now my CD drive has dissappeared from W98
device manager and bios screens also the CD light does not illuminate when
the unit is switched on.
Anyone have any ideas?

I apologize, I mistaken your thinkpad for a 600X. The test
you should run is the Advance Test in the BIOS. Please
perform the following test.
1) Boot into the BIOS.
2) Click the Test Icon and afterwards press Ctrl + A.
3) Press the "ESC" key to escape from the Fru connection
screen.
4) Press Ctrl + break to escape from the keyboard screen.
5) Click on the HDD-1 and perform the advanced test on the
HDD.
