I recently bought an 18-month-old 600E (2645-4AU) in pristine
condition from a member of this list. Compared to my old 701,
I love the speed (10X as fast), the larger screen, and the more
robust and faster keyboard.
However, I'm having problems, mainly with PCMCIA.
Cards that worked just fine on the 701:
Ethernet : Linksys EC2T
V.90 modem : IBM International Modem with GSM
The above would work 95% of the time in the 701, singly or in
combination, and could be removed without stopping them,
usually.
Under Win98 in the 600E, the modem mostly does not work at all.
The ethernet card (a very basic model) will sometimes crash the
computer if inserted on the fly. Recognition of the other
computers on the LAN is very sluggish.
33,6 modem : IBM 25H6420
The above modem connects solidly and stays connected, but
inserting it will often send the Linksys into a tizzy, and
vice-versa.
My best modem option so far is the internal modem, which has
only disconnected once that I can remember. But I don't really
trust them, and would like to have a PCMCIA option working
well.
Memory Card: Kodak Picture Card Adapter
This was recognized instantly on the 701. I never had a
problem with it. On the 600E, it's sluggish to recognize the
new drive, sometimes I have to eject and reinsert it.
I have downloaded and installed the latest upgrades (5 of them,
took about 2 hours) as directed by IBM Upgrade Connector,
including BIOS 11 / 20 / 99 - INET35WW . I didn't notice an
improvement afterwards. Subjectively, PCMCIA seemed worse.
So, how can I improve the PCMCIA performance?
While I am here, what is ConfigSafe Autocheck? Beyond being an
icon in the tray.
What is "Access ThinkPad". It is a selection over the Start
button. It launches
"C:\IBMTOOLS\Access ThinkPad\bin\AccLaunch.exe"
, the hourglass comes up for a second and then nothing happens.
I find Access ThinkPad Properties in the task box.
And are there any utilities that actually tell you what is
happening inside your computer? The ThinkPad Configuration (in
the tray) does not tell you very much, nor does Win98. For
example, if a modem is not working, I'd like to know why.
