I think you are having resource problems due in part to W98 and in part to
the internal modem, which uses COM2 and associated IRQ's
The 600E modem works VERY well, and I think you are just wasting your time
with 33.6 modems!
That being said, I have a P2 400 running SE, and it ABSOLUTELY REFUSES to
configure any ATA device (PCMCIA hard drives, Shark Drives etc). The same
machine has a W95 OSR2 partition, and the above devices work perfectly!
I use a 3COM EtherlinkIII (3C589C) ethernet card, and it works just
perfectly - there are commonly available for around $20-25.00 - you may want
to pick up one of these - no drivers are necessary, WIN 95 and 98
self-configures this card without problems.
I think the Access ThinkPad is supposed to bring up the on line manual.
