my thinkpad 600 that i just got is still freaking out when i try and run
Xfree86 most of the time. it worked fine all of last night. i thought
it was a font problem. but, today it's totally crapped out on me and i
can't figure out why so i'm begining to suspect hardware... (another
reason i suspect hardware is it froze on booting syslog awhile ago, and
the hard drive is making unhappy noises somtimes...).
so. the only good part to this so far is that i just found out that
this ebay find of mine... is still under warenty.

so... here is the reason of my mail to the list. i don't have windows
on this machine. it's running debian gnu/linux. will there be a
reluctance to belive hardware failure when they could blame it on a "toy
os" like linux? because there are a large number of people with
perfectly working thinkpad 600's running in linux, i've even used some of
their x configuration files to the same results.
what has been anyone's expirence with alternative operating systems and
asking for repairs from ibm?
