I had screen jitter problems with my 1480i, which is an OpenBSD machine.
After talking with the people on the 800 number I sent it in, with a little
note
explaining that this wasn't a Windows machine, with instructions on how to
login (I made a IBM account for them) and shutdown the system.

I got the unit back with the fixes I wanted, and in fact the IBM account
had been logged into, and the shutdown procedures had been used correctly.

In my experience they were in fact able to deal with a non-Windows
machine. One other time I called the 800 number on a question about the
1480i, I mentioned that I ran OpenBSD on it, and the person asked me
what differences there were from NetBSD, an intelligent question which
meant that he already knew about the BSD opsystems.

So, I think IBM has a slight understanding of non-Windows stuff, at least
in the EZ-Serve side of things. But wait--they aren't really a part of IBM,
are they? Hmmm. Well, at any rate, my experience was a positive one.
