No, I have even removed the PCI Ethernet card.

See below.

selected profile.

I don't.

Well, it gets past the IBM logo and the 1st DOS-like window (the one with a
progress bar telling you Windows is starting up) rather quickly.
Then it takes quite a while to get past the Windows 2000 Professionnal
window (the progress bar stops a few times for 10 sec) (~40s)
Then it instantly skips the password window (I didn't set any) and the
screen goes light blue and a small window appears, saying :
- Windows is starting up (10s)
- Preparing your network connections (I don't need that) (20s)
- Applying security strategy (I don't recall defining one and I certainly
don't need one) (30s)
- Loading up personnal preferences (15s)

Then, once I actually get to the desktop, it still takes a good 30s before
the HD stops buzzing like crazy and things stop happening in slow motion.

The Startup folder is empty (or so tells me Runservice, a small freeware
utility that looks into Win.ini, the Registry and the Startup folder) and 9
programs are loaded through the Registry :
- AtiPTA
- IBMPMSVC
- LTWinModem1
- PRPCMonitor
- SoundFusion
- Synchronization Manager
- tourpath
- TpHotkey
- TrackPointSrv

All of them are located in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Maybe I don't need some of this stuff. But I have a hunch that part of the
problem may be with these "network connections" and "security strategies"
that take so long to load. The trouble is I have no clue as to what some of
these Registry programs do and even less as to how I could get rid of these
"Network" and "Security" things.

Thanks again for your time. Any help appreciated.
