That is simply not true, Steve.
I have a friend who bought an ibm 18G disk about two years ago
and it failed last month. IBM verified that it was sold by a dealer
they dealt with, and they shipped out a new disk. I've heard of
this happening before, and now I know someone who got a
replacement disk after the one year mark.
I know you got bitten by a one year warranty on a disk you bought,
but you shouldn't blind yourself to the fact that it is possible to get
an extended warranty from IBM, depending on where you got the
disk from.
