They can get _quite_ hot, e.g. uncomfortable to hold, and be working fine.

NO! They're 16VOLTS at _3.36AMPS_! The FRU list of units that can be used in
the 600 is very long as IBM seemed to change the numbers frequently. As long
as it says it will work in the 600 series you'd probably be OK. They're also
frequently listed as being 56WATT units.
