Dear Thinkers,

It's been a while since I posted here! (nearly 5 years - sheesh) Last TP I
had was a 760ED, which I've now replaced for an i-series 78M. Both are/were
excellent machines (apart from the keyboard in the former), but one aspect
constantly annoys me about the 78M. The power management and the fuel guage.

Now, in the 760ED, the fuel guage was great - you could actively discharge
the battery before charging it, to ensure it was getting a full drain /
recharge cycle to help preserve battery life. However, in the i-series 78M
the fuel guage is much simpler, and you cannot do this. Is there any reason
why IBM used an inferior piece of software in a more modern machine? I can't
say whether it's an earlier or later version than the 760ED, but the version
I'm using in the 78M is 1.05.

Currently, Win98's power management program goes into standby when the power
is still at 5% (no matter what you set it add, oddly enough), although
restarting it a few times eventually persuades it that I really don't want
to switch it off yet, and then finally it dies about 10 minutes later when
the power finally does reach 0%. This is a pain in the butt when trying to
fully discharge the battery before I charge it again.

Is this a known problem? Also, can I download the superior version of the
Fuel Guage program (and expect it to work) - sorry I can't remember the
version number I used to use on the 760ED.

There has to be an easier way, right?

Best wishes,

Adam Britton
