Gosh... The only translation i'm familiar with is the one by Abdullah Yusuf
Ali. Also has many footnotes (possibly by a group calling themselves the
Commentators. i've often seen footnotes that say "the Commentators agree" or
"The Commentators say so-and-so", but i'm not sure if the footnotes are by the
Commentators or if they're by another annotator who references them.) that
interject opinions, clarifications, background material, reverence, indications
of unknowns,all sorts of stuff.
I watched a videotaped lecture that my mother procured of one Sister Amina, who
said that the Yusuf Ali translation was the most well known and popular
translation, but she preferred another one, whose translator's name i can't
remember. (the "Sister" isn't an indication of being a member of the clergy.
There is no clergy in Islam. (At least not in the Sunni sect. (Boy... i'm
probably going to hell for suggesting that there's more than one version of
Islam being practiced in the world. :) )) just, Muslims are supposed to
consider each other brothers and sisters, and that's how she was introduced
before the lecture.) She acknowledged that the Yusuf Ali translation was
probably the 2nd best Arabic-to-English one.
