Upstart in telecom, maybe, but you'll be surprised to learn Nokia was
founded 30 years before Paul Galvin was even born (see
http://www.nokia.com/inbrief/history/). I'm quite sure someone who owned
and kept Nokia shares since the 1920's would be far wealthier than with
the equivalent amount of money invested in Motorola shares over the same
period.

My dear James, I'm happy to see your view of Europe is at least as
stereotyped as most Europeans' view of America ;-). But read
http://www.nokia.com/inbrief/history/focusing4.html and notice that not
all European countries have had their phone systems owned by governments.
