Yes, they're _very_ loud, depending on the speed they're transferring data at.

The speed at which the drive is spinning. You have to remember what the 24X
speed of your drive designates. 1X CDs transfer data at approx. 150KBps. A 24X
CD transfers data at up to 3,600KBps, a 24 fold increase! Hence when you're
playing a game on a Constant Linear Velocity (CLV) drive, the CD can be spinning
up to 24 times faster than if you were listening to a music CD, which is fixed
at 1X.
