Firstly, to all those who replied, thank you. Your tips were useful.
Secondly, I want to relate my experience with a particular plastic
cleaner, only because the results are unusual.
I had a rummage around in my shed, and found a bottle of "protectant
2001" which is made by the people that make Turtle wax (car cleaning
stuff). It is their equivalent of "armour-all", which as most of you
would know, is a general plastic/rubber/vinyl cleaner. I refuse to use
armour-all, because it creates a "slick" slippery finish which I don't
like... but protectant 2001 claimed that it didn't create a slick
surface, so I decided to try it on the Thinkpad.
I tried it on an inconspicuous area, applying it sparingly, and it
seemed to work well. So I plunged in and did the whole lid... when it
dried, I was horrified to find that the lid was now covered in
horrible "swirl" marks, as if a corrosive substance had been spilled on
the lid, and then carelessly wiped off. As you can imagine, I felt
pretty morose about this result, and rubbing the cover with a dry rag
made no difference. So I decided that there was nothing I could do
about my stupidity, and I went to bed.
The next morning I got up, and lo and behold, the cover looked good.
Not 100%, but definitely much better than before I had applied 2001.
The finger prints were gone, as were the swirl marks, and the only mark
that remained was the 2cm long scratch (which no polish was ever going
to fix).
I was fairly non-plussed about this result, although I was pleasantly
surprised. Perhaps this product has a solvent in it which takes a while
to evaporate?
Note that this is NOT an endorsement for this product. Use at your own
peril! I cannot guarantee that your results will be the same as mine.
In fact, I'm scared to try it a second time. If you scare easily, I'd
recommend you stay well away from this product. For those of you that
have a "spare" thinkpad, try it and let us know if you have similar
results.
Joe.
PS: Before you ask, I can guarantee that no one snuck in during the
night and "cleaned" the lid!
