Whilst playing Commandos 2, my T20 hung and I ended up powering down.
I can't now get windows 98 to reboot. The current message is "While
initialising
device NTKERN: Windows protection error. You need to restart your
computer."
I get this on normal and safe mode boots. I assume something inside
windows
is corrupt. Is there anything I can do to repair this damage? I don't have
a recent
backup, so if there's no fix I need to get the data onto my desktop drive.
I have
access to an IDE adaptor, but I'm not too sure how to get the drive out of
the
T20. Does anyone have any instructions (which screws/panels need removing
etc and a pointer to a web site with pictures would be ideal).

By the way, there's is no problem booting to the command line, so if the
worst
comes to the worst I can always use the floppy drive, but that's going to
take
ages since some of the files are quite big.

I'm also planning on installing WinXP soon, so is it just worth trying an
install
from the command line. Would this effectively install a upgrade version of
the
OS and keep all my files? Could I also delete all the non-data stuff from
the
command line and then do a fresh installation. When the OS installer asks
for proof of the original OS for upgrade purposes, is the IBM installation
CD OK or does it need a proper Win98 CD?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers,
Phil Spencer.
