I have had trouble-free operation from my SMC7004BR Barricade router (1
10BT WAN, 4 10/100 LAN ports, plus Windows print server) for over a
year. It's pretty cheap - around $70, occasionally less with discounts
and rebates, and is bulletproof in operation. Check
www.practicallynetworked.com for extensive hardware reviews. At the time
of purchase it was the ONLY router that had 100% positive user comments
- many others had issues with game servers for Counter Strike etc. And
it was also the 2nd fastest router they'd ever tested.

The only unit that was faster was the Netgear RT314 which had this
problem with game servers. Again, check the website for up-to-date
information, but my personal experience is overwhelmingly positive -
read the manual, follow instructions and you're done in 20 minutes tops.
FWIW, I have both a PC and a Mac hooked up so it's definitely compatible
with both, although (in theory) it shouldn't matter what machine you
have as long as it conforms to networking protocol.
