Here is an oft repeated answer to your question.

Another solution (learned with list help) that worked on my 755C is to:
1. bend the one or two of the last two pins so they don't make contact
2. clip the cable so that at least one of the last connections is open

Reason is that the drive selector (master,slave) changed as the drives got
bigger. Check
<http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/dcra/dcrajum.htm> and
you will see that your new drive doesn't need the pins jumpered. The old
hd did and that was done in the cable or mb.
