Michael Edwards.
Not quite my first post, but I haven't said much here. I wonder if I could
ask a question, please, about this worm, if anyone knows the answer.
I've received three separate copies of it from different people, and what
happened seems to be different from everything I've read about it. My ThinkPad
is a 770-ED, and I'm using Windows 95, Internet Explorer ver. 4.0 (4.72.2106.8,
more precisely), and Outlook Express ver. 4.72.2106.4 - all of which may
possibly be relevant.
As soon as I moved the selection bar in the list of e-mails onto one of the
infected messages, it instantly crashed Outlook Express. I've not read of this
happening in any of the stuff I've read about this worm. I didn't even get the
chance to see if anything was in the body of the e-mail, nor the chance to open
the attachment (which I wouldn't have done, anyway) - the crashing was instant.
I've read of certain telltale files this worm leaves, and I don't have any
of them.
My questions are:
Is it likely that I'm infected?
Why did it crash Outlook Express, and not just let me open the attachment?
As I said, this seems quite different from most of what I've read.
Is there something about my older versions of the software that are
incompatible with the worm, and make it impossible for it to infect me? (I know
I'm immune to several viruses or worms because of using older software - it
seems a very good reason to me not to upgrade, although my primary reason is
just all the bother and trauma it would involve.)
I'd be glad if anyone could please throw a bit of light on this. Thanks.
Regards,
Michael Edwards.
